Is It Safe To Leave Your Resort In Punta Cana?

Punta Cana sits on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic with over 50 kilometers of beautiful beaches. This town faces both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Punta Cana attracts tons of visitors from across the globe. There are numerous 5 star all-inclusive resorts making it a popular tourist location.

There are many benefits to visiting Punta Cana on your next vacation. The transparent waters, child-friendly hotels, and reasonable airfare prices are just a few of the great perks. The hot weather, sandy beaches, and variety of water activities make this an appealing location for all ages.

When should you avoid Punta Cana?

Punta Cana is busiest from December to April. Because of the high demand at this time, prices of lodging and transportation drastically increase. This is especially apparent during the holiday season.

The weather is also important to consider when deciding when to visit. The weather is usually hottest from June to September; coldest in January and February; and rainiest between May and October, with the least amount of rain occurring between November and December. It is also important to note that Punta Cana is susceptible to the Atlantic hurricane season (June to November).

The most ideal time to travel to Punta Cana is from March to May because business starts to slow down and the weather is still nice. In addition, the prices are more reasonable. However, consider that during spring break, there may be an increase in tourists.

Is Punta Cana safe to walk around?

Because pickpocketing can occur to tourists walking around, be extra cautious when walking in isolated areas and at night (try to avoid walking at night, if possible). It is recommended to always walk in groups. In addition, stay in tourist areas and avoid outside neighborhoods.

How do people stay safe in Punta Cana?

Compared to other places in the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana is much safer with lower crime rates. Many all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana have high security in the resort and beach area. Safety is a major concern for these resorts as tourism funds their business; there is even a special police department dedicated to tourist safety.

When outside the resorts, tourists must be extra cautious — especially during the holiday season. The public transportation system has unpredictable schedules and are often overcrowded, increasing risk for pickpocketing and other crimes. Below are safety tips for visiting Punta Cana:

  • Remain observant of your surroundings — especially on public transportation and in airports.
  • Avoid driving during your visit as the driving conditions are drastically different from the U.S. For example, cars often move from lane to lane with no signals. The best alternative is to use a well-known tour company or ask your resort/travel agency for a recommended private driver.
  • Do not display signs of wealth such as wearing expensive jewelry that would make you a target for robbery. If you do find yourself confronted with a robbery attempt, do not resist.
  • Be wary of individuals who are overly attempting to help you with luggage, directions or other things.
  • Use ATMs in places with plenty of lighting or inside of a bank. Avoid carrying too much cash at one time and always check your bank account for any abnormal transactions.
  • If you are pulled over by police, request their name and do not pay any tickets on the spot. There have been reports of locals impersonating police and requesting money for different offenses.

Are there any travel warnings for Punta Cana?

Yes. The U.S. State Department issued a Level 3 Travel warning due to COVID-19. Prior to the pandemic, the Dominican Republic had a Level 2 traveling warning due to their crime rates. This warning urged all tourists to “exercise increased caution”.
